# Things That > Human-first intelligence product design and development I'm Jack, a product engineer and designer. I build products that help people think, work, and play. I build human-first products that treat the human side as seriously as the technical side. Interfaces that feel conversational, systems that explain their reasoning, and technology that fits into how people actually work rather than forcing them to adapt. For over 20 years, I've worked with teams at Google, IBM, Air New Zealand, Kpler, EE, News UK, Tesco, and The Economist, sitting in the space between product strategy and hands-on engineering, designing systems and shipping products that make the complex feel simple. Work on the site includes Mass, On the River, Emmly, Beryl, Appo, and FaultFixers. Design the product, build it, and ship it to production. --- ## Price **£10,000/mo** Two or three days a week, two-month minimum. One slot at a time. ## For Product teams that need design and engineering, and either need short-term scaling or don't want to hire long-term. ## What happens I'm in your repo and your process, two or three days a week. I design the interface and write the code. Once people are using it, I stay to help you scale and improve. ## You leave with Work in production every month, and a way of working the team can keep when I leave. --- # Pair session Maybe you're working on a product and you're stuck on how to make it live. Or you're still in the design phase, and you want to make actual progress. We work together to go live. Half a day, or hourly. --- ## Price **£600/4hr** or **£200/hr**. Remote, over a shared screen. Or if you're based nearby, I can arrange it in person. ## For Designers, product engineers, and solo founders who want to get something live. ## What happens Your project, on a shared screen. I'll talk through what I'm doing: how I brief the tools, when I throw a draft away, what we commit. ## You leave with Working code in your repo that you own, notes for how to keep going, and a recording if you want one. --- # Team workshop Hands-on workshops for teams adopting tools like Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT. We work on your product: design and engineering workflows and automation. --- ## Price **£3000/day** for a small team, two days for a larger one. Remote or on-site; travel billed at cost. ## For Design and engineering teams using AI tools on a live product. ## What happens We set up the tools, then work on your actual product. I cut the day to what you need that week. If managers want a session on what to look for, we do that too. ## You leave with A working setup, shared habits for briefs and prompts, and work committed to the repo. --- # Product design, thinking machines, and AEO. The human side is as serious as the technical side. Interfaces that feel conversational, systems that explain their reasoning, and technology that fits into how people actually work. ## Product design and engineering Designing the interface and writing the code that makes it happen. This is the core of my fractional consultancy work, and what I do every day. ## Thinking machines How people talk to it, how it reasons, how it fails, and how it stays in production. Not just designing the interface, but engineering products that make inference trustworthy. ## AEO and GEO Answer engine optimisation for your site and products, making them the source an AI assistant quotes when it answers a question. Unlike SEO, which competes for a ranked link, AEO competes for a citation inside a generated answer. --- # Work with me Alongside my product work, I do 1:1 pair sessions and workshops for teams and individuals in the industry. I work with product engineers, designers and solo founders who want to get more out of their AI tools, and with teams that need a fractional design+build partner. ## Fractional design + build I join your team in-house or remote and do the job alongside you. From designing the product to building it and then shipping it to production. ## Team workshop Hands-on workshops for teams adopting tools like Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT. With over 20 years' experience in engineering and design, I've put my knowledge into courses that work. ## Pair session Maybe you're working on a product, but you're stuck on how to make it live. Or you're still in the design phase, and want to make actual progress. We work together to go live. --- # Tools, books, and people to follow. A list I keep coming back to while I build. --- # Fractional design and build, workshops, pairing and consultancy Alongside my product work, I do hands-on development consultancy, 1:1 pairing sessions and workshops for teams and individuals. This is for teams that need a fractional design and build partner, or for product engineers, designers or solo founders who want to get more out of their AI tools. --- # AI that helps people think, work, and play. The human side is as serious as the technical side. People shouldn't have to adapt themselves to a model. You still think. When you work, play, or try to make sense of something, you talk to the agent, see what it is doing, and stop it. Interfaces that feel conversational, systems that explain their reasoning, and technology that fits how people already work. --- # Commerce sites people buy from. You browse and buy without a tour of how the company runs. I build that on Shopify, BigCommerce, or a custom stack, for brands around the world. --- # Mass Human insight, reimagined through synthetic minds. A platform that allows you to create synthetic human personas that can think, reason, and respond like real people. [https://holdmass.com](https://holdmass.com) --- # Mass Run synthetic research on your desktop with local LLM models. [https://holdmass.com/desktop](https://holdmass.com/desktop) --- # On the River Rivers and canals, mapped. Britain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium waterways, locks, clubs, channel guides, and route planning. [https://ontherivermap.com](https://ontherivermap.com) --- # Emmly Make space for what you imagine. Creative partner that unlocks new ways of thinking, feeling, and making. Emmly empowers creators to explore, experiment, and create without limits. [https://emmly.xyz](https://emmly.xyz) --- # Emmly Creative workflow management platform for creative teams using the inspiration and work they already have. Connected to the latest generative AI tools, from Seedance to Gemini. --- # Beryl E-commerce website for Beryl, a London-based bike light and transport company. Today, they support over 300,000 people using their bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters and cargo bikes to get to work, to university, and to explore. --- # Appo Prototype build to help businesses automate customer support and sales for dental practices using AI and chatbots, with HIPAA-compliant data collection, storage, and insights. --- # FaultFixers Identity for FaultFixers, a facilities maintenance company. --- # Let's talk If you're building a product and you need the human side of the engineering as well as the system, tell me what you're building and which services you need. Either reach out by email or feel free to book some of my time on my calendar. [hello@thingsthat.com](mailto:hello@thingsthat.com) [Book a 30-minute call](https://cal.com/thingsthat/30min) I'm always honest about what I can and can't do. If I'm not the right person for it, I'll tell you straight up. I have a large network of incredible designers, engineers and innovators, so if I'm not the person, I'll know someone who is. --- ## Insights # Analysing Christmas Adverts 2025 Mass Vision is a persona-based video sentiment tool: a synthetic screening room for ads. You upload a film, synthetic personas watch it, and narrate reactions moment by moment, explaining why, tied to identity, lived experience, ethics, and context. The output is a tension map (not a safe average): where the same scene splits audiences, who feels seen, and who feels repelled. The Christmas ads analysis shows why this matters: social sentiment gave broad takes after launch; Mass Vision shows the segment mechanics underneath, at specific moments. Run it in minutes, iterate while changes are still cheap, and stop learning the hard way in public. [Read on thingsthat.com](https://www.thingsthat.com/insights/analysing-christmas-adverts) [analysing-christmas-adverts](https://holdmass.com/p/analysing-christmas-adverts) --- # Mass My mum thinks it's cool. My friends think it's as odd as a cat with wings. Getting human opinion is hard. It's time-consuming, expensive, and we're not sure we can trust the result. That's why we built Mass, a platform to deploy hundreds of synthetic human personas that think, reason, and respond like the target audience. They're brutally honest and unfiltered, giving a real sense of what audiences want in minutes, not months. And at a fraction of the cost. Understand perspectives, validate messaging, explore positioning, and more before committing to the real human research.
